Obese Men Face Twin Threat From Prostate Cancer (HealthDay)

While everyone knows that consistently getting a good night's sleep is important for increasing your muscle mass, all of that time spent (literally) fasting can set your training schedule back noticeably and considerably.

If you've been doing everything else COMPLETELY by the books and your strength training regimen still isn't paying off with the results it should be, a good night's sleep may actually be the culprit responsible for your disappointment.

Getting frequent meals with sufficient doses of protein is critical - crucial - to strength training success. But going seven to nine hours straight through without a BITE to eat doesn't really fit that bill, does it?

Maybe this is why you're starting to feel as though you look more like a cyclist than you do a body builder or strength trainer.

Many weightlifters fall for the assumption that the only other alternative is to set your alarm clock for some God-awful early AM hour and stumble into the kitchen to choke down a protein shake and a hunk of steak.

But for those of you afraid of being institutionalized for OCD, there IS another option. It's much less extreme and will still allow you to sleep soundly throughout the night - interruption free!

The following five supplements won't "just" prevent muscle degeneration - they'll actually work overtime to boost muscle growth - all while you're fast asleep.

1. Casein Protein. This is the predominant protein found in milk - comprising about 80% of every glass you pour. While whey protein is the best choice for rapid absorption, if you're looking for slow, long-lasting release, this is the way to go. Your best bet is micellar protein, an unaltered form of casein that actually clumps together in your stomach, creating a slow-release gel that supplies your body with the protein that it needs for as long as seven hours straight! This means that your body won't "steal" essential amino acids from your muscle protein - quite literally breaking down your muscle fibers at the cellular level.

Recommended Dose: 40 mg (taken with skim milk or water) right before you hit the hay.

2. Recommended Dose: 5 grams taken roughly half an hour before you head off to bed.

4. Glutamine. This amino acid can boast a number of essential functions, namely preventing muscle breakdown, improving your body's immune function, boosting muscle recovery - even increasing your fat-burning speed AND capacity. Your GH levels will be markedly higher within an hour and a half of ingestion.

Recommended Dose: Between 5 and 10 grams along with your arginine.

5. ZMA. This supplement is a potent combo of zinc, magnesium aspartate and Vitamin B6 - a few of the most commonly depleted minerals among athletes. Adding it to your nightly cocktail can increase your testosterone and insulin-like growth factor levels -essential to muscle growth.
